Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle While Living In An RV

What is healthy living? For me, healthy living is a lifestyle choice that includes daily exercise, reducing stress, and improving the way we eat. It’s a lifestyle that enhances your mind, body, and overall well being – whatever that may look like.

Exercise Daily To Improve Your Health

Some people have workout schedules that may include gym memberships or they may attend local yoga classes. For us as full-time RVers, our healthy living lifestyle takes a little bit of effort and some imagination due to we are never in the same place for very long. Even though we have the option of joining 24 hr gyms like Anytime Fitness (which has over 4,700 locations nationally), we choose to exercise by hiking, biking, and exploring the area we are visiting. Not only do you get to be out in nature and see the sights, but you’re also getting your steps in too!

Exercising Ideas While Living Full-Time In An RV

  • Find local hiking and biking trails in State Parks, National Parks, or Urban Trails.
  • Practice yoga and popular breathing techniques.
  • Create a home gym with inexpensive, compact workout equipment or by using household items like canned vegetables and firewood.
  • Find a nice lake or river to go kayaking and canoeing.

Reduce Stress To Enjoy Life

Reducing stress takes practice and patience…we try to just GO WITH THE FLOW! (sorry for the pun) Our RV life hasn’t been peachy all the time. We still have to deal with life stressors like when the RV is in the shop for a week and I feel homeless! That was a not-so-great week! Challenges come and go; life is full of changing seasons, but we choose to take each day as it comes with a positive outlook and good vibes.

Top Tips For Reducing Stress

  • Find a quiet corner to read a good book.
  • Practice yoga and deep breathing. Yoga With Adriene is a great Youtube channel that teaches all the right moves!
  • Get outdoors – go hiking, biking, kayaking… there are so many outdoor activities to do in new places.
  • Spend a day exploring! You never know what you will find especially when you’re visiting Small Town USA.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy living lifestyle. Many studies have shown that sleeping at least 7-8 hours a night will improve your health, helps maintain a healthy weight, lowers stress, and improves your mood. When we lived in a traditional home, we worked all the time, stayed up late to watch TV, and definitely did not get enough sleep. This often caused me to be sluggish, have less energy, and caused stress.

Transitioning to full-time RV life has had so many benefits for our lives including being able to get a good night’s rest. We always feel well-rested, have tons of energy, and just feel refreshed every day!

Eat A Well Balanced Diet

What Is The Keto Diet?

Recently while visiting friends in Tennessee, I was introduced to a healthy living lifestyle that includes a low-carb (KETO) meal plan. The Keto diet has become popular in recent years with more people limiting their intake of carbs and refined sugars while increasing healthy fats.

The Keto diet is a healthy living meal plan that requires a person to limit their carbohydrate intake, allows for moderate protein, and require high consumption of healthy fats. Typically, the body converts carbs to glucose which then is used as the primary source of energy. However, when the carbohydrate intake is limited, the body begins using its second source of energy – FAT! With the Keto Diet, a person’s macronutrient goal is usually about 5% Carbs, 25% Protein, and 70% Fats.

Benefits of the Keto Diet

Even though more research needs to be done, several studies have claimed that the Keto diet may offer several benefits. Some of the suggested benefits include:

  • Supports weight loss and appetite control
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Regulates hormone imbalance
  • Reduces blood sugar
  • Promotes heart health
  • And…much more!!

Since learning about the Keto diet, I have wondered if introducing a low-carb meal plan to the RV lifestyle could be achieved. Could the Keto diet be what I’ve been missing in my healthy living lifestyle quest?

Can The Keto Diet Work For Me?

Practicing a new way of eating and cooking, for that matter, seemed like a daunting task at first. First, I have such a sweet tooth and have a weakness for Coca-Cola. A normal day often consists of biscuits or pancakes in the morning, sandwiches for lunch, and rice and gravy with some sort of bread in the evening. All the while, drinking way too many Cokes and not enough water. As a result, I often have little to no energy, suffer from headaches, and just feel plain rotten.

Second, I had to worry about the dreaded “Keto Flu”. Some Keto Dieters are known to experience symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and digestive trouble when starting the new low-carb meal plan. The symptoms are caused by your body getting accustomed to a new way of eating. Thankfully, not all people experience the “Keto Flu”, and the symptoms usually go away in the first week.

Needless to say, I knew that introducing a low-carb meal plan to my RV lifestyle wasn’t going to be easy. I had to learn what I could eat, what I couldn’t eat, and …what do you mean I can’t have “real” sugar in my coffee?!?

Below are a few of my favorite foods and some of the No-No’s that are included in the Keto Diet:

Overall Thoughts On The The Keto Diet

I’ve been practicing the Keto Diet for three months now. It was difficult at first, adjusting to a new way of eating. Travis thought I was starving him at one point, but we’ve adjusted and seen several benefits. I no longer crave sweets, I have more energy, I’ve been sleeping better, and even lost a few pounds.

We love incorporating a variety of healthy meals and have realized we don’t have to eat all day to fill full. We just need to eat the right foods while still enjoying a snack or two.

Maintaining a healthy living lifestyle is a choice we make to enhance our body, mind, and overall well being. It takes daily inspiration and motivation. With these tips and ideas, we can maintain our healthy living lifestyle while living in an RV, and so can you!
